NAMM 2020: New Fender Tom Morello, Jim Root and Eric Johnson signature models announced at NAMM
Fender launches three new guitars at NAMM, the Tom Morello, Jim Root and Eric Johnson signature models. We already called two of them via leaks online.
Tom Morello Soul Power Stratocaster
It’s finally here! Fender have at long last, teamed up with guitarist Tom Morello to bring us his Soul Power Stratocaster signature guitar. There was speculation over the model a few weeks back but now the news is official. The guitar is based on a modified Designer Series Stratocaster which Morello has played since his Audioslave days. It has an alder body and a deep-C-shaped neck, with a compound radius rosewood fingerboard.
The Soul Power Stratocaster is, of course, a heavily customised strat. The kill switch is probably the most notable modification. There is also a recessed Floyd Rose Locking tremolo, a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails Bridge humbucker, and two Fender Noiseless pickups in the neck and middle positions. There’s even a Soul Power sticker included, so you can make your guitar look just like Tom’s.
Fender also announced that it will begin working with the Fender Play Foundation in 2020. I’m curious to see what we’ll see there.
Jim Root Jazzmaster V4
The new Jim Root Jazzmaster V4 is not entirely unknown to us. EMG Pickups already revealed details in August 2019. Looks like Fender and Jim have teamed up once again, to create a new, brutal-sounding Jazzmaster model, worthy of his characteristic fat riffs.
The guitar comes loaded with Daemonum Open-Coil EMG active pickups in the neck and bridge positions. The mahogany body is painted in polar white, which makes an excellent contrast to a black stage outfit. The maple neck has a shred-worthy 12″ radius ebony fingerboard with 22 jumbo frets. Frets are marked with mother-of-pearl block inlays.
The guitar does away with frivolities such as vibrato, tone control, etc. What remains is the essential: a volume control, a 3-way switch and a hardtail bridge.

Eric Johnson ‘Virginia’ Stratocaster
Eric Johnson used his 1954 ‘Virginia’ Stratocaster to record the Grammy-nominated album Tones in 1987. Three decades later, Fender is reissuing a limited number of Eric’s famous Strat in both Custom Shop and Corona production line variations. Seeing as it is not just a reissue of a vintage guitar, but a particular vintage guitar tailored to the ‘Cliffs of Dover’ guitarist’s tastes, the Eric Johnson 1954 Virginia Stratocaster should delight players and collectors alike.
Prices

Ah nuts. That Morello Strat is fantastic. But I don’t want to be associated with an Antifa-supporting Communist -anti-Capitalist millionaire hypocrite.
Word. Really disgusting for Fender to give him a sig in the first place, imo.
