NAMM 2020: Gamechanger Audio LIGHT Pedal – Optical spring reverb!
The new Gamechanger Audio LIGHT Pedal is an optical spring reverb pedal, that uses light to create its reverberations.
Gamechanger Audio LIGHT Pedal
After the groundbreaking release of the Plasma Pedal back in 2018, Gamechanger Audio is to release the new LIGHT Pedal during Winter NAMM. They are describing it as an optical spring reverb in a pedal.
The Plasma Pedal received variations in the form of the Jack White Third Man Records edition last year and the Eurorack edition. So hopefully we will see variations of this new LIGHT Pedal effect in time as well. I know that their Plus pedal is also a very popular effect, so it’s possible we are about to see another great innovation from the company.
I own one of the Plasma pedals myself and love it. I’m looking forward to checking out this new take on a spring reverb personally.
No loss with light?
Just like their Plasma Pedal used plasma, this new ‘spring reverb’ uses light and a set of springs. They state on their main page that a traditional spring reverb uses up a lot of energy across its vibrating spring and that this gets lost by the time it reaches the reverb tank’s output transducer, which means you lose a lot of subtly, nuanced harmonic content.
By using light and extremely sensitive Infra-Red optical sensor pairs placed at specific regions of the spring, GameChanger Audio can retain those ‘lost’ movements.
At the time of writing there are no specific details on this new pedal, but I’m sure we will hear all about it at the show.
You can check out the demo video below to hear it in action. One to check out at Winter NAMM for sure.
