NAMM 2020: Laney launches the new Cub-Super range of amps
After yesterday’s announcement of new gear, Laney has just announced a whole new line of delicious tube amplifiers and matching cabinets. Let’s take a closer look at the new Laney Cub-Super range.
Laney Cub-Super Top
The flagship of the series is the Cub-Supertop, a 15 watt boutique-style, single channel all-tube head with a 3-band EQ, gain, master volume and an interesting boost circuit (which can also be controlled via a foot switch). There is an extra input that cuts the output down to 1 Watt and allows you to saturate the amp without annoying the neighbours. Nice!
Black Country Custom ‘verb
The built-in digital reverb is based on the algorithm of the in-house Black Country Custom SECRETPATH pedal. In terms of sound, this makes sense for a modern day amp, and good digital spring reverbs are becoming common in 2020.
The focus here is on pure tube sound. The Cub-Supertop delivers CLASS-AB tube power in a compact housing with, a pair of 12AX7 tubes in the preamp–stage and two EL84s in the power section. A sure-fire recipe for some tasty tones! An FX loop is also available.
The head can be paired with the matching Cub-112 or Cub-212 cabinets. The latter can be set up either horizontally or upright. A well thought-out design from the folks at Laney.
RRP – TBC
Cub-Super 12
The larger of the two combo amplifiers, the Cub-Super 12, is a combo version of the separately available head. The amp can be connected to an external cabinet as well and the Cub-112 is probably best suited for this job.
RRP – TBC
Cub-Super 10
The smallest amp in the range is the new Cub-Super 10, which unfortunately comes without any reverb. I think that’s a shame, but most of you probably already have your favorite reverb on your pedalboards anyway. On the other hand, I find it more regrettable that it only has one input and supplies only 10 watts. The ability to switch down to 1 watt makes the other devices significantly more attractive. But if you just want a little tube amp, then this is perfect for the job. Again, an external speaker can be connected to this model as well.
