NAMM 2020: Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-1b refreshes their best-selling synth
Pittsburgh Modular has moved to a new look for all their modules reflected in the Voltage Control Lab. This has now reached the Lifeforms SV-1, their best selling BlackBox modular synthesizer.
SV-1b
Ok, so nothing has really changed other than the front panel but it’s dramatic enough to warrant a bit of notice and celebration. The old Pittsburgh style always put me off a little bit. It had a flavour of old and tired medical equipment about it. The new look coming from the Voltage Control Lab is much more interesting and engaging. They did go a bit darker with the MicroVolt but there’s something about this blue/grey that really appeals to me. But the “b” in SV-1b does stand for “black” so I guess that must be a reference to the colour around the outside.
Other than the change to the front panel colour and a couple of button changes it’s the same dual oscillator modular synthesizer that’s perfectly happy to be played standalone or as a module within a larger rack. In includes everything you need to start exploring modular synthesis and unlike similar-sized synthesizers it is not semi-modular – you to patch it together properly.
Here’s a quick look at the new SV-1b.
