Neumann BCM 705 & BCM 104 broadcasting mics – now in black
New colour options for podcasting microphones
The Neumann BCM 705 MT and BCM 104 MT are well-proven microphones in new coloured versions. Both are specially designed for vocal recording and are suitable for broadcast, podcast and voice-over applications. The BCM 104 is also ideal for live streaming, while the dynamic BCM 705 can be used to record instruments and amplifiers. In addition to the classic nickel finish, both microphones are now available in matte black.
Neumann BCM 705 MT
Both coloured versions of the Neumann BCM 705 are listed under the ‘Instrument Microphones’ category at Thomann – which shows just how flexible this dynamic microphone is. Like the BCM 104, it was originally designed for vocal applications. However, the manufacturer points out that the characteristics of the BCM 705 means that it is just as suitable for loud vocals, brass instruments and even guitar amps.
The Neumann BCM 705 has a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, with a inherent noise level of 18 dB-A. The hypercardioid polar pattern ensures a relatively narrow recording area, but also minimises much of the often disruptive ambient noise. As this is a dynamic microphone (with a condenser capsule), no phantom power is required. As you can see in the picture, a pop filter and elastic suspension are already built in.
The German manufacturer says that the Neumann BCM 705 has an ‘American’ radio sound, i.e. speech is clearly brought to the front, while a 2kHz boost improves speech intelligibility. In addition, the bass response has been slightly reduced to minimise the proximity effect.
The microphone is now available in a matt black* finish, although the nickel* version is still available.
Neumann BCM 104 MT
This large-diaphragm speaker was also developed by Neumann specifically for radio, podcasting and live streaming. The design is similar to the BCM 705 in many aspects. The large-diaphragm condenser capsule is elastically decoupled and protected by an integrated pop screen. The frequency response is also 20 Hz to 20 kHz, but the Neumann BCM 104 uses a cardioid polar pattern. Inherent noise is also significantly lower at just 7 dB-A.
Two internal switches can be used to make adjustments as required, providing a cut at 100dB or a 14dB reduction in output level. The Neumann BCM 104’s otherwise relatively neutral frequency response is boosted at 4 kHz, with a slight high-frequency boost from 10 kHz. Again, Neumann emphasises that the microphone’s wide frequency response makes it suitable for many other signals.
The microphone is available from Thomann in matt black*, the ‘Classic’ version* is also still available. A matching microphone boom arm for both microphones is available from Roadworx*.
