Many beatmakers and upcoming pianists use and love Melodics – it’s like the Duolingo of drum practice! For years, the community has asked for a dedicated iOS app (and Android). Today, there is a new Melodics app, completely redesigned to help you practice your drum chops wherever you want to!

Learn piano, controller pads, e-drums and acoustic drums through Melodics

A gamified approach like Melodics’ can make a big difference if you’re into beat-making in a DAW or on a standalone unit like the popular MPC range. It’s one thing to smash the pads on the MIDI controller or hit the e-drum pads. It’s very different to create a groove, let alone something in the realm of J Dilla.

While the Melodics app will definitely not make you the next J Dilla, it can greatly speed up your learning curve in terms of flow, rhythm knowledge, and coordination. In the beginning, Melodics offered paid and free lesson plans to learn piano, pads on an MPC or Push-like controller, or an e-drum kit.

Just about a year ago, they also added support for acoustic drum kits. Their app could recognize which drum you hit and then guide you through the lessons just like it did for e-drums. However, one thing was missing to make Melodics truly mobile: a mobile app. At least for iOS, this changes today.

The new Melodics app for iOS: Practice everywhere

Up until today, there were apps for macOS, Windows and iPadOS. But let’s be honest, if you go the mobile route, it needs to be on iOS as well. Melodics had the same idea. After a couple of years of development, they are releasing the all-new Melodics app for iOS.

Because it has “cutting-edge audio recognition technology” integrated, you can load it up on your iPhone, run its calibration setup and you’re good to go in minutes. Because of this technology, you can practice your lessons on an acoustic drum kit, on a drum pad or just about any hard surface. You just need a pair of drumsticks!

More Information

If you own an e-drum kit, you simply connect your iPhone via Bluetooth or wired. The company has not mentioned what their plans are for the Android community so far. But given that they took the time to develop a dedicated iOS app, an equally dedicated Android app to practice drums with can’t be far off their radar. I’d assume that there are at least as many drummers with Android phones as there are those with iPhones, so it would make sense.

Gamified approach with free and paid plans

The iOS app is free, and you also get the first twenty for free of over 500 lessons. Their approach is gamified, similar to Duolingo. There are monthly and annual paid plans that unlock all lessons and over 60 songs to jam to. I can’t tell if these plans differ from those on the website.

If they are the same, the monthly plan starts at 24.99 Euros for the standard plan and 29.99 Euros for the premium plan, unlocking over 60 songs in addition to the 500 lessons. If you choose the annual plan, it’s 118.99 Euros or 9.99 Euros per month for the standard plan. The annual premium plan that includes the song lessons runs at 161.88 Euros annually or 13.49 Euros monthly.
