Kickstart 2 by Cableguys ft. Nicky Romerro: cutting-edge sidechaining
Kickstart 2 is producer Nicky Romero and developer Cableguys’ worthy successor to the Kickstart sidechain effect plug-in. Sidechaining is a commonplace technique in any stage of the production process. A trivial example is side-chaning the kick drum to a compressor placed on the bass track. With appropriate settings, the sounds no longer get in each other’s way. Kickstart lets you do similar stuff but without a compressor! Here’s more about version 2…
Nicky Romero & Cableguys Kickstart 2
Cableguys plug-ins are pretty huge among dance music producers because they innovate familiar concepts and cater to some unique needs of theirs. The original Kickstart offered adjustable volume envelopes to help stop low frequency overlap. Version 2 goes several steps further with the ability to follow the transients in rhytmic audio – not just kick drums, but also complete loops. This makes it suitable for use with, for example, breakbeats or analog drum machines which rarely sound 100% on-point.
Moreover, the volume envelope automatically adapts itself to the input signal volume to enable more precise adjustments. Also new is the multiband parameter whose purpose is to limit the frequency range in which the effect is applied. There is also a real-time visualizer to go around with it.
Price and availability information
Kickstart 2 is available from its website for just EUR 15. If you own version 1, you can upgrade from this page for just EUR 5. The plug-in works under macOS 10.9+ and Windows 7+ in 64-bit VST, VST3, AAX and AU formats. A demo version and tutorial videos are available on the website
