Novation have released a new firmware for the Circuit. Version 1.4 brings a smallish bag of welcome improvements plus a pack of sounds and samples that you can upload to your Circuit.

The main two improvements are to do with patterns. You can now change the length of drum patterns from anywhere between 1 and 16 steps. Drums 1 and 2, and drums 3 and 4 share the same pattern length. These run independent of each other and the synth pattern lengths giving you some really interesting rhythmic possibilities. The other pattern change is that you can now instantly move from one pattern to another, rather than the change happening at the end of the loop.

Other tweaks have been made to the MIDI clock where it is now dead easy to turn it on and off. You can also now colourise your sessions directly from the Circuit rather than having to connect to a computer.

Team Novation Circuit Pack

On the Circuit Components webpage Circuit manager a new options has arrived under Packs. A “Novation” button has appeared that holds a pack containing the original Circuit sounds and samples. Above that is a brand new pack called the Team Novation Circuit Pack. Four sound designers, Alex, Chris, Danny and Enrique, who are so famous we only need their first names, have been let loose to create some alternative takes on the Circuit sound engine. There’s 32 sessions and 64 patches to play with – nice!

It’s not a stunning upgrade but it’s a welcome one. The pattern length change and instant pattern firing is going to bring a lot of interesting poly-rhythms to the mix. The Novation packs could indicate that we’re in for a library of Circuit sounds and samples.
