Novation Launchpad MK3: Live controller gets bigger pads & a sequencer!
Third time’s the charm, they say, and it’s likely this will be the case with Novation’s Launchpad Pro MK3. One of the most popular Ableton Live pad controllers now receives a built-in sequencer for MIDI control over any compatible instrument, in addition to other goodies that make it even more powerful but no less colorful.
MK3 brings aboard transport controls and other Live-specific shortcuts like Print To Clip and Capture MIDI, as well as eight Custom Modes and a Components Editor for deep customization. Another new addition is Chord Mode for quickly punching in chords and harmonies. Despite these considerable improvements, Launchpad MK3 is more compact but with larger pads (still 64 of them). The USB-C port providing computer connection and bus power is a nice final touch, too.
What else about the Launchpad? Well, it’s a controller! It turns the creative aspects of music production into a tactile activity, which makes for a much more engaging workflow than penciling in notes with your mouse in the piano roll. Launchpad is meant for Live, but it’s not strictly limited to the Ableton DAW. You can configure it for pretty much anything that talks MIDI and get sounds out of it by banging on the RGB pads. Fun times!
