Nystrom Crum Hum: Generative Experimental Soundscape Synth
Nyström Crum Hum is a generative experimental soundscape synthesizer with 12 different sound engines, built-in effects, and plenty of randomization. If you’re into floating ambient textures, evolving drones, and glitchy effects, this one should be right up your alley.
Nyström Crum Hum
The Swedish developer Albert Nyström has announced Crum Hum, a new 3-voice experimental synth with 12 different sound engines. Crum Hum generates chords and melodies based on an internal or external clock and a chosen scale. With lots of knobs and three triangular touchpads, it offers plenty of hands-on control for expressive performances.
The 12 sound engines range from simple sawtooth and square waves with lowpass filters to various wavetable and FM engines to more complex setups like bass, chords, and melody. You also get 12 different scales to choose from.
Each of the three voices (although it appears that a single “voice” can also play chords at certain settings) has a triangular touchpad that lets you control the timbre and volume simultaneously. Each voice also offers a Frequency knob for setting the lowest possible note, as well as a Random knob that sets the probability of notes being played for each clock pulse.
The Tone knob affects the timbre of all three voices simultaneously. What it does exactly depends on the selected sound engine. Tone can also be randomized for subtle to drastic sonic variations at each clock pulse.
Moreover, Crum Hum features built-in delay, reverb, and overdrive effects, as well as an LFO that can modulate the frequency, tone, or volume. There’s an internal clock generator, but you can also sync the synth to an external clock source. Most parameters can be controlled via MIDI CC.
In addition to a stereo audio output, Crum Hum features a CV output that corresponds to the touchpads, meaning it can double as a touch controller for your modular system. Nice!
