Raccoon Audio OctoWah Stew: One-Pot Wonder
Judging by the delightful (or mildly disturbing?) pixel art that graces this plugin’s GUI, I wonder if Raccoon Audio had originally planned to release OctoWah Stew for Halloween. Watch in horror as the mischievous coon lowers his victim into the pot as you crank up the octave knob. Or come to the rescue by dialing back the effect.
So what is OctoWah Stew? In a nutshell, it’s a dual octaver, overdrive, and auto wah all in one, like a tasty stew of effects to spice up and fatten your tracks. As you turn up the Octave knob (thereby bringing the poor guy closer to his inevitable demise), two octaves are gradually introduced (first upper, then lower). At the same time, the degree of overdrive increases.
OctoWah Stew also includes a Tilt knob for quick tone shaping from dark to bright. For an extra dose of spice, the Wah knob gives you a choice of three distinct auto wah settings.
OctoWah Stew is available for macOS and Windows in VST3 and AU formats.
Thony Audio Resonator: Turn any Drum Track into Tonal Resonances and Chords
As far as I’m concerned, Thony Audio Resonator is easily one of the coolest free plugins we’ve featured in this column in a while. It’s a bank of resonators that vibrate with the input signal, letting you turn drum loops and other rhythmic material into tonal textures and chords.
You can choose between sawtooth and square waveforms and adjust the decay and color of the effect. Then, adjust the pitch of the first resonator to match your track. To build a chord, use as many of the other six resonators as you like and tune them to any interval in relation to the base note. Each resonator also has its own fine tune, pan, and gain controls, so you can create wide, lush chords and stereo effects.
But that’s not all. Resonator lets you store up to eight different chords in eight modules. By switching between modules, you can create a chord progression. This is even MIDI-controllable, which makes Resonator a great performance effect.
Thony Audio Resonator is a VST3 plugin for macOS and Windows.
Fine Classics Subtle Spaces: Free Convolution Reverb Plugin
Subtle Spaces by Fine Classics is a free convolution reverb plugin with simple controls. Simply select the IR of your choice, adjust the width and pre-delay, dial in the desired dry/wet mix, and you’re good to go.
Out of the box, Subtle Spaces comes with 16 impulse responses, including rooms of various sizes and a couple of unusual acoustic spaces. The plugin also includes 40 presets tailored to specific instruments or applications.
As an added bonus, Subtle Spaces allows you to load your own IRs. There’s even a filter section for fine-tuning the effect.
Subtle Spaces is available for macOS and Windows in VST, AU, and AAX formats.
