Ernie Ball Music Man and Mars Volta’s Omar Rodríguez-López: The Mariposa is official!
A few weeks ago, we guessed that the visually captivating new Ernie Ball Music Man Mariposa was coming as a signature version for Omar Rodríguez-López. And voilá: it’s just been officially announced!
Ernie Ball Music Man Mariposa
The Mariposa, it turns out, was designed from the outset with the involvement of Mr Rodríguez-López. In case the name doesn’t ring a bell, he’s the guitar player with renowned indie rock bands Mars Volta and At The Drive-In. It’s going to be available in four finishes and there will be both Standard or Deluxe versions on offer.
Let’s look at the specs. The Mariposa has a lightweight offset African mahogany body, a burnt maple neck, with gunstock oil and hand-rubbed special wax blend finish and an ebony fretboard. You also get locking Schaller tuners and a two-point floating tremolo. Another nice feature is a set of two custom-wound Ernie Ball Music Man Humbuckers wired via a three-way selector switch.
The model has is a 25.5″ scale length and is loaded with 22 high-profile/medium-width frets. Then there’s the unique laser-etched floral pickguard, which I feel really makes the guitar stand out from the crowd and adds a nice touch to the overall aesthetic of the instrument. I’m sure it will divide opinion, but I really like it!

The Mariposa Deluxe comes in Imperial Black or Imperial White finishes and gold hardware. The Standard edition is available in Dorado Green or Pueblo Pink, with chrome hardware. Other than that, all models seem to have identical specifications.
