Orange Baby Amps and O Tone 40: A Solid-State Affair

Orange is introducing three Baby amps that pack the punch we’ve come to love from Orange but at a much more compact form factor. The amp maker is also releasing the O Tone 40, a solid-state combo amp.
Orange Baby Amps: Tour Baby 100, Gain Baby 100, and Dual Baby 100
The three new Baby amps from Orange can be viewed as evolutions of the amp maker’s famed Pedal Baby 100*. Each amp is lightweight (3 kilograms) and comes with a 100-watts, twin-channel, Class A/B, solid-state amp known from the Pedal Baby. In addition, each of the new Baby amps comes with an FX loop. Let’s take a look at the differences.
The Tour Baby 100 comes with a clean channel and a dirty channel. A VCO Compressor is built-in on the clean channel, and a two-band EQ. Once you switch to the dirty channel, it’s a point-of-break-up affair. Besides a three-band EQ, and controls for Presence and Gain, you get two volume dials. Besides the master volume, you get a second one. That setting can be accessed with the included foot switch, so no need for a boost pedal! Said footswitch also changes between the two channels.
Gain Baby 100 and Dual Baby 100
The Gain Baby 100 has the same clean channel as the Tour Baby 100 and the same foot switch functionality. However, the dirty channel is a different affair. For it, you get four stages of saturation, which can go from subtle warming into massive overdriven sounds and everything in between. There is also a dedicated Tight Switch that, when engaged, boosts the upper mids at lower gain levels.
The dirtiest-sounding of the Baby amps is the Dual Baby 100. Channel B is the same as on the Gain Baby 100. Channel A, however, heavily leans on the sounds of Orange’s beloved Rockerverb amps. There is also a Tubby Switch that boosts the bottom-end of the signal early in the chain for some sonic might.
O Tone 40: Black or Orange Combo
Besides the Baby Amps, Orange is also releasing a new combo, the O Tone 40. It’s a single-channel, 40-watt Class A/B solid-state combo with onboard tremolo, reverb controls, a buffered FX loop and a direct output.
But since we’re in Orange-land, this is no ordinary tremolo. It’s a foot-switchable JFET tremolo circuit that allows for grand sweeps to staccatos with a distinct sonic character. Same goes for the reverb, but, to keep costs from exploding, Orange is opting for a digital reverb module that emulates a classic spring reverb,
The speaker is a 12″ Voice of the World model, which is perfect for the bluesy tones the O Tone 40 can create. Both an Orange* and a Black* model are available, and each one costs 499 euros.
How much does a new Baby Amp from Orange cost?
The three Baby Amps are available to order now at Thomann. The estimated delivery time is 4-5 weeks. The Tour Baby 100*, Gain Baby 100*, and Dual Baby 100* each cost 599 euros.
