Origin Effects Halcyon Gold Overdrive: Another Klon-style drive?
Does the world really need yet another Klon style overdrive pedal?
The latest Origin Effects Halcyon Gold Overdrive pedal is their take on the classic Klon Centaur overdrive circuit. Though, it isn’t just a straight-up clone and features a few extra tweaks to the original circuit design.
Halcyon Gold Overdrive
Does the world need yet another Klon-type overdrive?
Well, Origin Effects thinks that it does and has just announced the new Halcyon Gold Overdrive pedal.
DRY
The key specifications of this pedal include adaptive circuitry which responds to volume changes and playing dynamics of the user. It also has an ultra-high input impedance plus a DRY control which lets users adjust the level of the dry signal being added to the overall drive tone.
Voice & Adapt
A Voice switch offers two versions of the Klon tone, one with a classic mid-push and the other with a standard drive tone. This also has a dedicated level control of its own, so users can blend in as much or as little of the dry signal.
Then there is the ADAPT switch which is used to allow the pedal’s mid-forward voicing to gradually fade away as the pedal cleans up. As the mid hump increases with the gain control, Halcyon’s Adaptive Circuitry allows users to run higher than usual levels of drive and still clean up to transparent boost tones.
The new Halcyon Gold Overdrive is powered by a mains adaptor only and requires a 9 V centre negative tip power supply.
Verdict
It sounds very Klon-like in the demo videos and if you like this type of overdrive, but want these extra features, then it probably makes sense to check one out.
I think the price is about right for such a well-made pedal and one that is made in the UK using high-quality components. It should last you a lifetime and is far cheaper than an original Klon. Plus, it sounds like it is more versatile than an original as well.
MSRP – GBP 249
