Thunderstorm Chaser by Boom Library

Who doesn’t love a thunderstorm? Ok, maybe some people still get a little freaked out by them but for me, I love the magnificence and majesty of mother nature doing what she does best. And since the dawn of time, recreating a thunderstorm has always added drama to a scene.

From large sheets of metal to analog synths, we can fake the sound, but capturing the real deal is not as easy as you might think. Mother nature doesn’t have a timetable, so it’s great to have people who make it their job to capture such things.

In today’s world of Dolby Atmos, the ability to create a convincing thunderstorm in sound has never been easier and libraries like Thunderstorm Chaser by Boom Library is exactly what you need. Now, I don’t necessarily see lots of straight up electronic musicians wanting to invest in this, but if your work involves foley design or effects dubbing, this is definitely for you.

Delivered in both stereo and 3D versions, Thunderstorm Chaser is likely to be as definitive a collection as you might ever need. Recorded by Matt Mikkelsen, he combined the knowledge of meteorologists with a cutting-edge recording rig to capture as many extreme weather events as possible.

Panorama Acoustic by Sonora Cinematic

Sticking with the cinematic feel, next on our list is Panorama Acoustic by Sonora Cinematic. I always wanted to play guitar as a kid, inspired by the likes of the Beatles, Kinks and Rolling Stones, and latterly by more modern rock influences, but my short, stubby fingers didn’t like the guitar and so I ended up being a drummer and messing with synths instead!

But the joke was on the guitar in the end because whilst it defeated me, I won in the end because amazing sound library developers and scripters were able to faithfully recreate the guitar as software I can use on my computer with my keyboards! Yay for technology!!

The number of guitar sample libraries available today would make any discerning guitarist weep. There’s something for every style, genre and taste imaginable. Sonora Cinematic’s Panorama acoustic is, in case you hadn’t already guessed, is a lush, cinematic acoustic guitar library for Kontakt Player as well as the main Kontakt app itself.

That alone is music to most people’s ears as you won’t need to buy the full version of Kontakt to benefit from this collection. They’ve taken three premium acoustic guitars, played by Matteo Nahum, and then crafted them into a library with a very simple yet powerful interface.

The three guitars samples are a steel string acoustic, a nylon string acoustic and a 12-string. Sonora have used their Aria Engine that delivers two customisable layers that can be blended between using an X-Y control, the motions of which can be recorded and saved for use later.

But sampling the strings is one thing. Capturing the playing and articulations is quite another. Fear not, as Sonora have captured a wealth of different articulations to choose from to give you that natural sounding performance.

Each layer also features sound-shaping tools including filters so that you can make everything you play your own. There’s full NKS integration and over 100 presets to get you started. Panorama Acoustic is available to buy directly from Sonora Cinematic for just £49, normally £59.

Free Patches for impOSCar 2 and Oddity 2 by Mr Arkadin

I can you some of you already… “Why are you featuring presets for out-of-date synths?” Well, that’s a good question is that not everyone upgrades to the latest and greatest and, chances are, those who have might still have the previous versions installed.

Ad Astra for bx_Oberhausen by OCTO8R

There has been a glut of Oberheim SEM recreations in both hardware and software in recent years, at all ends of the market. the bx_Oberhausen by Brainworx is at the upper end of the market, but with good reason.

bx_Oberhausen is an excellent recreation of the module that launched a thousand synths. Well, three or four, maybe. But it also adds things like frequency modulation, an arpeggiator and, of course, the ability to load and save presets!

Ad Astra by OCTO8R is, so the blurb says, “…a celestial journey of 47 meticulously crafted presets!” Bold claims indeed. However, if you listen to the demo video below, these aren’t half bad at all! Making full use of that huge “Oberheim” sound, this collection is a lot of fun.

The trick up Ad Astra’s sleeve is that each patch is effectively two in one. In a feature that resembles the brilliant Morph feature found on Arturia’s PolyBrute 6 and 12, moving the mod wheel changes the patch into something new and entirely different!

And best of all, it’s just two of your American Dollars! That’s right, buy it here for just two measly bucks! Bargain!
