Patina by Minta Foundry Simulates a Record Player Right in Your Browser

Vinyl is hip and popular, and if you want to get into it without having your own record player, you should definitely try Patina. This is a web application from Minta Foundry that simulates a record player right in your browser. Not only that, but you can also adjust the properties of the vinyl.

This free online vinyl “plugin” captures everything that makes vinyl sound so special: the “soft” crackling, the subtle distortions, and wow and flutter that bring the recordings to life. Of course, there is always a certain romanticism involved, but sometimes you just have to have it!

Patina lets you simply drag and drop your own audio file into the browser interface and give it a vinyl sound. And the turntable simulation leaves nothing to be desired: you can change the tempo and thus the pitch up to an octave up and down, and there are a total of twelve parameters for the sound character.

Cool Sound Design Options

For example, you can adjust the texture of the vinyl, tweak crackles and pops, as well as dropouts and the age of the record. You can also manipulate the characteristics of the pickup, and Patina offers a wealth of detail.

The player itself has options to change the stereo balance and even loop playback. Great!

You can listen to the result, of course, but you can also download it as a rendered audio file. This is really cool because it turns Patina into a real creative tool. Not only do you get a nostalgic sound for your audio files, but you also get a free sound design tool. And that makes it a good alternative to some vinyl simulations.

For example, Patina makes it easy to achieve the old-school sound of hip-hop producers of the past: play a loop of yours with a vinyl sound at a higher pitch, save the new file. Then play the sample back in the browser at a slower speed to get back to the original tempo. Add a bit of Bitcrusher and you’ve got a vintage character.

With Patina, Minta Foundry gives us a really nice freeware tool that is fun to use and can also be used creatively. It’s also a great advertisement for their other “real” plugins. Awesome!
