Positive Grid Spark Edge: Smart AI Busking
Positive Grid Spark Edge adds artificial intelligence to your amp
The Positive Grid Spark Edge has just been announced. It is a compact, 65-watt multi-channel smart amp with intelligent features and app compatibility.
Spark Edge
Positive Grid has revealed its new Spark Edge multi-channel amp, which could be the perfect companion for busking musicians. It has four channels and 65 watts of power, a beam angle of 120 degrees, and the ability to act as a standalone PA or Bluetooth speaker.
Lightweight
It weighs around 6.2 kg and has a 6.5″ main speaker, a 1″ compression tweeter, and two reflex ports. It makes it relatively easy to move around, and it has plenty of great features for musicians.
Sonic IQ
It also uses Sonic IQ Computational Audio technology to “precisely enhance each musical note.” This allows the Spark Edge to refine dynamic range, deepen bass, and enhance vocal clarity.
The amp has a master EQ and volume control, so you can make quick adjustments as you play. It has two dual XLR jack combo inputs, stereo inputs on channels three and four, stereo line outs and a headphone out.
The integrated battery lasts up to ten hours at medium volume – with three hours of charging time. However, those who play longer and louder can buy additional batteries separately and then replace them if necessary.
Two units can also be combined to give a stereo performance so that it can be expanded easily.
Spark app
Connectivity includes USB-C, Bluetooth and WiFi control for the Positive Grid Spark app and for updates with new features.
Channels
The first channel has Positive Grid’s innovative amp technology and has access to 36 amp models and 50 effects.
Channel two has settings for acoustic guitar, bass guitar and vocals, with amps and effects tailored specifically for those. Finally, channels three and four have stereo inputs for backing, drum machines, and other instruments.
Groove Looper & Smart Jam
Channels one and two have eight user presets that can be edited and customised. They also have a built-in Groove Looper, access to 100 drum patterns, and Smart Jam, which can create backing tracks ‘on the fly’ and accompany you as you play.
Auto Chords is another helpful feature, as it displays chords for songs in real time.
Spark AI
One of the most prominent features that could be useful for players is the new Spark AI. This intelligent feature allows users to create guitar tones using user prompts automatically. It was first rolled out with the launch of the Spark 2 and is now being integrated into this latest product.
The basic idea is that users can ask for a specific type of guitar tone, and the artificial intelligence will dial one in for them. Like most things using AI, it will only improve over time.
Optional Sunburst and On The Edge grilles for speakers can also be purchased.
Pricing & Pre-Order?
The official price has yet to be revealed, but if you want to know more, you can add your contact details on the Positive Grid site to get updates on the pre-order process, release dates, etc.
Positive Grid has announced that the Spark Edge will be available at a special discount during pre-order.
Verdict
The whole concept is undoubtedly appealing and could be perfect for many guitarists. The price point will significantly impact how many of these sell to new users who have never used Positive Grid’s speakers. However, I can see existing fans of the brand wanting to try these out, especially if it sounds as good as the marketing implies.
