PRS Dead Spec Silver Sky emulates Garcia’s Alligator
Based on Jerry Garcia's Alligator
The PRS Dead Spec Silver Sky is a limited run of 1000 guitars worldwide. They were designed with John Mayer to emulate Jerry Garcia’s legendary “Alligator” guitar.
Dead Spec Silver Sky
These PRS Dead Spec Silver Sky models are based on the guitar John Mayer has been playing on the 2023 Dead & Company summer tour. It takes a standard Core Silver Sky model and modifies it quite drastically. All so that Mayer could emulate the tones of Jerry Garcia’s “Alligator” guitar.
“After playing the Silver Sky designed for the 2023 Dead & Company summer tour, I realized the guitar was special. It quickly became apparent this wasn’t just a tool for one particular job but could be extremely versatile in other players’ hands. I’m excited to hear the music that’s made on these guitars.” – John Mayer
Swamp Ash
This Dead Spec model uses a lightweight Swamp Ash body, deviating from the standard alder body of a regular Silver Sky, and it is finished in a Moc Sand satin nitro. The grain of the wood is clearly visible through the finish and shows off the Swamp Ash nicely.
Hard Tail
It also has a modified PRS patented Gen III Tremolo, securely screwed to the body, transforming it into a string-through-body hardtail bridge. The inclusion of the tremolo’s brass block also enhances the guitar’s warmth.
There is also a brass nut and a string retainer bar to help with changing the tone and making it more like Garcia’s Alligator.
Alembic Blaster
One standout feature is the replacement of the jack plate with a brass-plate Alembic Blaster preamp. This preamp functions as a boost and comes with an internal pot allowing players to add 3-14 dB of gain when it is activated.
This run is limited to just 1,000 units, the PRS “Dead Spec” Silver Sky is set to ship from November 2023 to March 2024.
