PRS launches a new stompbox range with three designs. The Horsemeat transparent overdrive, Mary Cries optical compressor and Wind Through The Trees dual flanger. In an already very crowded marketplace. Is this the best time to launch a new pedal range?

PRS Pedals

PRS Guitars now has a pedal range, and all three designs are offered as high-quality through-hole construction designs. The PRS pedals includes the aforementioned Horsemeat transparent overdrive, Mary Cries optical compressor and the Wind Through The Trees dual flanger. Each one is a new design and offers useful features.

Saturated marketplace

All three of the ‘made-in-the-USA’ pedals are true bypass and are powered by a 9V battery or 9V DC power supply.

Overall, they look well made and I can only imagine, that they will be solid designs. Just it is an odd path for PRS Guitars to pursue, as the world of pedals is already very saturated. However, Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, etc all have stompboxes in their ranges, and so I guess PRS want a slice of that pie as well.

Horsemeat Transparent Overdrive

The PRS Horsemeat Transparent Overdrive is an all-new design based around a germanium diode. This will no doubt put it up against the Klon circuit, which has a similar reputation for being transparent and its use of the germanium diode.

Overdrive Controls

This Horsemeat has controls for Gain, Level, Voice, Treble and Bass. Making it more complex in terms of the EQ section, compared to an original Klon Centaur overdrive pedal. Just like a Klon, you can use the Horsemeat as a clean boost, or to push an already drive tube amp.

Next up is the Mary Cries Optical Compressor and this design is an analogue one based on the LA-2A studio compressor. It has a super simple control interface consisting of Output Gain and Compression.

Boost

This compressor can work as a regular compressor, or as a boost for your guitar signal.  Which makes it a useful tool for guitarists, even though it is such a simple pedal.

Last up, is the new Wind Through The Trees Dual Flanger which is possibly the most interesting of the three new designs.  This design has controls for Manual, Depth and Rate per flanger side, as well as global Regeneration and Added Highs.

LFOs

Besides the footswitch to engage the effect, there is a also mix knob for the two LFOs. If like me, you enjoy modulation pedals, then this could be one for you.

One response to “PRS launches new stompbox range with three designs”

The PRS pedals are being built by John Cusack & team at Cusack Music. They are a go-to assembly company for ’boutique’ pedals. They’ll be great quality for sure, but people may think these are being built in Maryland BY PRS.
