Paul Reed Smith designed the McCarty range of guitars many years ago, based upon his discussions with Ted McCarty, the designer of many classic Gibson guitars. This range was always a popular one for PRS. His new 594 model now includes some tweaks to make it possibly even more ‘vintage inspired’ than the original McCarty range.

The 594 name itself comes from the scale length, which is longer than the standard 24.5″ scale – and actually is 24.594″. Paul Reed Smith believes, that it is this attention to minute detail that gives this guitar its vintage feel and tonality. The 594 features 58/15 LT pickups and push/pull coil taps on the tone controls, so should be a versatile instrument. PRS claim that the 58/15 LT pickups are very Gibson PAF-like in tone. The “LT” actually refers to low turn, which means they have that classic under wound, vintage humbucker tone that many players believe gives those old Gibson humbuckers their character.

The guitar also features a new version of PRS’s Pattern Vintage neck carve, which shares the same width measurements as their standard Pattern neck, just slightly deeper front to back. It is also asymmetrical, so should fill the palm palm of your hand comfortably. The Phase III tuners have been been tweaked slightly as well, adding another set screw which make the mechanism tighter and supposedly help transfer more vibrational transfer of the string.

The main body is mahogany and features a figured flame maple cap. The neck is mahogany with a rosewood fretboard with bird inlays.

Again, all minor redesigns that according to PRS add to the feel and sound of this guitar as a whole. Of course, Paul is an avid tinkerer and tweaker of guitar designs, so sometimes hears things that others do not. But you cannot deny he is a modern day master guitar designer. Not unlike Ted McCarty himself was back in his time with Gibson.

With players like John Mayer taking up PRS guitars as their preferred instruments, its no wonder they are popular – and I suspect the new McCarty 594 will be no exception.
