PRS Private Stock 2016 February McCarty 594. Why such an odd number?
Okay so Paul Reed Smith likes to show off what he can build and this Private Stock ‘Guitar Of The Month’ isn’t exactly a wallflower. It uses some very high end timber from his ‘Vault’ and has an unusual name as well, the 594 which refers to it specification.
The instrument is based around an unusual for PRS 24.594” and this is where the name come from. Usually PRS are either 25” scale length or 24.5” which is more like a Gibson scale length.
So Paul decided to use this specification to name the guitar. The reason I’m writing about it though is it has some strong links to John Mayer, who ‘accidentally’ leaked the guitar a few weeks ago on his Periscope video and so everyone over on TGP has been discussing this new potential ‘John Mayer Signature PRS’. Turns out that the one John was playing is actually the 594.
Spec wise it is based around a PRS McCarty although the tweaks are the aforementioned scale length and also a new neck carve that is unique to this model. They have tweaked the Phase III Tuners by adding a set screw to pull the tuner’s shaft, gear and worm together (which Paul states should help the ’tone transfer’). Plus they have added their 58/15 LT pickups (the LT stands for Low Turn), which helps to achieve a more vintage voiced instrument. Also a new two piece bridge design using Aluminium and Bronze, which is designed to age gracefully.
There are a total of 26 instruments available and this year marks the twentieth anniversary of PRS Private Stock, so expect a new ‘exclusive’ guitar each month this year.
Its a neat looking instrument, although not my kind of thing. However if you like expensive guitars with limited quantities then this will probably appeal to you.
No RRP as yet, but it won’t be cheap!
