PRS Private Stock 24-Fret McCarty: A Gold Minger?
All that glitters...
The PRS Private Stock 24-Fret McCarty model for September is a limited edition run of only twenty guitars, and is based on a model owned by Carlos Santana and with the top covered in 23 karat gold leaf.
Guitar Of The Month
This gold abomination, in my opinion, looks hideous!
That is my polite, politically correct version. I’m sorry, but it is all kinds of fugly and then some. The specs of the McCarty are a 24-fret neck and PRS bridge with a single-cut control layout. This model has the odd-looking early PRS headstock shape, which Santana is associated with.
23k Gold
Each guitar has somewhere between 25-30 3″ square pieces of 23k gold leaf covering the top of the instrument. To my eye, it just looks silly, uneven and tacky. The PRS bird inlays are a ‘lovely’ matching gold mother of pearl finish.
It’s a pity they spoiled the guitars with this ridiculous finish, as it otherwise would have actually looked half decent in just a regular gold top paint job. I can’t say anything else about it this without being rude, so I’ll say no more about its looks.
You’ll need to find a PRS dealer if you really want one, as this model is limited to only 20 guitars worldwide and I’d imagine there are probably at least 19 people on the planet with such terrible taste as to actually think this guitar looks cool. But are you number 20?
