PRS unveils new Orianthi Private Stock, S2 with 24-08 switch, SE electrics and more
PRS Guitars unleashes a slew of new models and updates for this year
PRS Guitars has been very busy this week with new releases. We all saw the official announcement/release of the new SE John Mayer Silver Sky model. But there is also a new Orianthi Private Stock, 24-08 switch-equipped S2 models and SE models. Plus, a new PRS-Voiced Fishman Sonitone Pickup system for acoustics.
PRS Orianthi Private Stock
Finished in Blooming Lotus Glow and featuring intricate Lotus Vine fretboard inlays, the new limited edition Orianthi Private Stock model is certainly a head turner. This model features a solid mahogany body with a violin-carve flame maple top, a one-piece Pattern Thin mahogany neck, and a 24-fret rosewood fingerboard.
You get a pair of PRS 58/15 humbuckers in the neck and bridge positions, wired via a five-way switch, and master volume and tone controls. You also have a Private Stock Eagle inlay on the headstock and the Orianthi logo on truss-rod cover. Hardware includes a set of PRS Phase III locking tuners and a PRS Patented Gen III tremolo.
PRS S2 Custom 24-08 & PRS SE Standard 24-08
The new PRS S2 Custom 24-08 and the PRS SE Standard 24-08 introduced this year feature the three-way pickup selector with two additional coil-split mini toggles, which was first seen on PRS Private Stock models.
“It’s not so easy to get eight musical, usable pickup settings in one guitar. Being able to go from full humbuckers to the crisp clarity of single coils and having all the in between sounds brings a lot to these instruments.” – Paul Reed Smith
The SE Standard 24-08 features a 24-fret maple neck, rosewood fretboard with bird inlays, and a pair of TCI “S” pickups. Of note, the new S2 Custom 24-08 now has the US Core series Pattern Thin neck carve, at last.
408 Switching
This is a great upgrade to both models, and gives players access to 8 pickup combinations. As ever, Paul Reed Smith never sits still and is always pushing his designs forwards, and this time it is great to see those tweaks trickling down from Private Stock guitars into the more affordable S2 and SE lines. You can hear both models in action in the demo videos below.
RRP – USD 729, and the PRS S2 Custom 24-08 USD 1929
New PRS-Voiced Fishman Sonitone Pickup System
The new PRS-Voiced Fishman Sonitone Pickup is supposed to give a warm, organic tone that allows the natural sound of the instrument to come through. It can be found in all PRS SE Series acoustic guitars, including the P20E Tonare Parlor, T40E Tonare Grand, and the A40E, A50E, and A60E Angelus Cutaway acoustics.
