Puremagnetik gives away two neat audio mangling plug-ins: Expanse and Driftmaker
Renowned sample library publisher Puremagnetik is celebrating the launch of its own music label with the release of a pair of free effects plug-ins. These are the Expanse Texture Generator and Driftmaker Delay Disintegration Device. Both can be downloaded completely free by subscribing to Puremagnetik’s newsletter.
Here’s more about each processor:
Expanse Texture Generator
This is a noise and drone generator plug-in that lets you spectrally blur, pitch, and filter audio. According to Puremagnetik, it’s capable of outputting “sweeping backdrops, resonating low drones, and many other textural canvases.” The plug-in has Filter, Stasis, Shift, Blend, Space, Size, and Output controls. The function of each is explained above the control set. This is a very interesting plug-in that combines noise generation, spectral blurring, pitch shifting and reverb into one seemingly potent unit. I gotta give this one a spin for sure!
Driftmaker Delay Disintegration Device
Summed up, this plug-in chops audio into grains and mangles the signal in an analog-inspired fashion. Driftmaker has Parse, Chop, Time, Drift, Blend and Gain controls – the function of each explained above the control set. What we are looking at is a granular delay with analog-style saturation and filtering, which sounds very exciting to me.

Further exploration
If Expanse caught your interest and you’d like to delve deeper into textural matters, definitely have a look at the aptly named Texture plug-in. It offers a different approach, based on layering/synthesizing sounds and running them through assorted filters & modulation. And to get your grain game on, have a look at good old Gleetchlab 4. This is a modular environment with a boatload of audio manglers to chain together into whatever it is you desire. Its selection of processors includes the “T-Grain” and “Ola” granular processes; “vb.Stretch” to time-stretch or pitch shift; the “Neural Distortion” complex sound destroyer; “Spectral Gate” fft processor; “ and more.
