Rast Sound Transformer: add morphing resonances to any audio track
Rast Sound has released Transformer, a unique effect plug-in that can transform any sound into something different. Using a bank of four self-modulating resonators, Transformer turns drum loops into vocoder-like chords, adds floating resonances to any audio track or creates outer-space effects.
Rast Sound Transformer
Rast Sound is best known for its sample libraries, but the company has recently ventured into effect plug-ins with the release of Naturaliser. With the aptly-named Transformer, Rast Sound has now released its second effect. The name says it all: Transformer lets you turn any audio signal into something completely different.
The plug-in consists of four resonators, which can operate in one of three timbral modes. Rast Sound says that these are akin to the different sound characteristics of instruments such as strings or wind instruments. After you’ve picked a mode, you can set each resonator’s pitch and gain and adjust the decay, tone, spread and pre-delay parameters to your liking. This allows you to turn drum or percussion loops into rhythmically resonating, vocoder-like chords, for example.
But there’s more. Transformer also includes an LFO with various waveforms that can be used to modulate the pitch, gain and decay parameters of each resonator independently, or control all four of them simultaneously. The LFO offers rate, depth and phase controls and can sync to the song tempo if desired. By modulating each resonator independently, you can create a web of morphing, floating resonances and inject another layer of motion into any audio track.
Transformer looks like an inspiring, creative tool that can quickly turn a lifeless signal into something exciting. From adding a tonal layer to your beats to experimenting with floating, resonating soundscapes, I can imagine a wide range of creative uses.
Price and availability
Rast Sound Transformer is now available for an introductory price of €29. After May 9th, 2021, the price will be €39.
The plug-in runs on Windows and macOS in VST3 and AU formats (64 bit only). It comes with a selection of presets.
