The sheer number of people making amazing boutique synths and other instruments is mind boggling. Case in point: Graig and Zera of Recovery Effects and Devices, who have been making small batch effects pedals, Eurorack modules and other cool things since 2009. The couple’s latest creation is Seven Sisters, a tabletop percussion synthesizer.

Recovery Effects Seven Sisters: Syncussion and Syndrum Essence

According to the company site, Recovery Effects Seven Sisters is “a percussion synthesizer with seven voices that aims to capture the essence of late ’70s instruments like the Syncussion and Syndrum.” Listening to the demo videos (below), the Seven Sisters sounds really good, beefy and full and very synthy.

Seven Sisters is based on the company’s Eurorack module of the same name but offers an expanded number of voices (rather than one at a time), with six playable simultaneously and one switchable voice.

Recovery Effects Seven Sisters: Voices

Each digital voice features multiple oscillators, noise generators and filters, allowing for complex tones beyond what the original 1970s devices could do. According to the company, you can dial in snare, hi-hat and cymbal sounds that range from synthetic to more realistic.

Recovery designed the device with live performance in mind, restricting on-board controls to essentials like pitch and decay, “making them easy to control in a live setting without the need for menu diving.”

Seven Sisters doesn’t have an built-in sequencer but it does offer manual trigger buttons plus six gate/trigger inputs.

Recovery Effects Seven Sisters: Price and Availability

Recovery Effects Seven Sisters is now available for presale from the Recovery Effects site (link below). The presale price is $249 and the regular price is $299. That is very affordable considering these are essentially made-to-order devices. Recovery expects to start shipping on December 4, 2024.
