Roland Fantom 3.0 and the n/zyme Model Expansion
Roland has updated their FANTOM workstation to v3.0 to support the EXM007 n/zyne Model Expansion all-new synthesizer engine.
n/zyme
It’s a whole new synthesizer engine featuring achingly modern sounds and a whole new architecture. n/zyme combines wavetable oscillators with your own waveforms and shapes drawn on the Fantom’s touchscreen. You then flow through Phase Modulation, Shaping Modulation with controlling envelopes, LFOs, Step Modulation and further shaping opportunities before emerging through the filter, amp and effects section.
In all there are six new synthesis elements: Wavetable, Wave Drawing, Step Modulator, Phase-Mod, Shape-Mod and Motional Function.
The Step Modulator allows you to route complex rhythmic modulations to almost any parameter while the other modulators bring movement and evolving textures to the wavetables. The Phase and Shape modulation tools are modifiable on the touchscreen so you can interact with the movement in realtime.
The Wavetable oscillator has 2 layers with waveform mixing and blending between the two. And then you can bring in your own waveforms by drawing them on the touchscreen. The Drawing page comes with a bunch of tools to manipulate your ham-fisted waveforms to add width, harmonics and modulations.
After all the futuristic messing about with the oscillators n/zyme also includes 8 classic filter types and 90 effects. You’ll find some classic Roland effects like the Juno Chorus and CE-1.
The n/zyme Model Expansion is a huge update the Fantom and essentially packs in a new and innovative synthesizer. The v3.0 update is free to Fantom users and also includes numerous bug fixes and some new effects. But the n/zyme Model Expansion will need a lifetime key purchase of $149.

One response to “Roland Fantom 3.0 and the n/zyme Model Expansion”
Very good update. If you use the Fantom as your main or only synth, the new synth engine looks quite cheap at the price. If Roland bundled it with new Fantom sales, they might pull in a few people who are looking at buying the Modwave (Korg’s wavetable synth). I imagine that wavetable being digital (ie not an analogue emulation), it’ll sound great on the Zencore Fantom
