It’s in the name: The Roland GO:PIANO 88 came out in 2019 as a compact, lightweight, and easy-to-use digital piano for beginners and anyone looking for a highly portable alternative. Now, the manufacturer has introduced the newly refreshed GO:PIANO 88. What’s new?

Roland’s GO series stands for easy-to-use and portable instruments and tools designed with beginners in mind. The GO:PIANO first appeared in 2017 in a 61-key version, with the 88-key model joining the line-up two years later. Now, Roland has released a new version of the GO:PIANO 88.

The concept remains the same. Like the predecessor, the new Roland GO:PIANO 88 is a compact digital piano with 88 full-size velocity-sensitive keys, which now feature an ivory feel coating. It’s important to note that the GO:PIANO does not have a hammer-action keybed, opting for semi-weighted keys instead. At just under 6 kg / 13 lbs, this makes it remarkably portable for an instrument with 88 keys.

The new version offers more sounds than the older model. All in all, there are 40 on-board sounds, including 10 pianos, 10 electric pianos, 10 organs, and 10 other sounds. If you connect the piano to the Roland Piano App for iOS and Android, you can use the Piano Designer to change settings such as lid opening, damper resonance and tuning. The app also provides access to another 256 GM2 sounds. Two sounds can be combined in split and layer configurations, and there’s a Duo mode for teaching purposes.

In addition to a metronome, the Roland GO:PIANO 88 offers a built-in MIDI recorder. On the back, you’ll find a headphone output, a sustain pedal jack, and a USB-C port for connecting the piano to a computer or mobile device. The USB port not only sends and receives MIDI data, but also supports audio, so you can play along to your favorite tunes. Furthermore, the GO:PIANO 88 offers wireless Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity for connecting to the Roland Piano App and other music apps on your smartphone or tablet.
