Roland SP-404 Mk.II Update – Multitracks & More
This new free update for Roland’s SP-404 Mk.II delivers a slew of useful new features for its portable sample workstation.
Risen From The Ashes
Roland’s SP-404 garnered a cult following on its original release. There was much fanfare when, in 2021, they decided to reissue it as the Mk.II. It came with a raft of improvements and streamlined features. A new version 3 software update released today sees a bunch of enhancements and performance improvements.
Multitrack Audio Support
The headline feature is the ability to perform with multitrack files from your DAW. The SP-404 can now import long audio files, playing them back in sync and allowing you to perform on top of them. I have to wonder if this feature is a response to Sonicware’s excellent SmplTrek. This newcomer already allows you to do this with three global audio tracks.
One Shot Playback allows you to trigger a long sample and still play around with shorter sample loops underneath. Patterns can now be converted into samples and used as loops and Pad Mutes are made easier and can now be automated within your sequences.
Enhanced DJ Mode
DJ Mode has also been expanded. You can now manipulate up to eight cue points per sample, sync to external MIDI instruments, adjust fader curves and assign time stretching. There is also a wealth of other workflow improvements that cover quantizing after recording, default MFX setups and finer tempo ranges.
SP-404 Mk.II Companion App Gets A Leg Up Too
The SP-404 MK.II app also gets an upgrade. Import and export speeds are improved. It also features AU/VST plugin support so you can use the app within your DAW of choice.
