Ruismaker FM percussion synth for iOS released by Bram Bos
The Ruismaker (Dutch for noise generator) was at one time a hardware drum machine that made perhaps the inevitable journey to software and to iOS. Their first plug-in was of the virtual analogue variety and they’ve now followed it up with an FM version.
Ruismaker the drum synthesizer
The key feature of these plug-ins is that they are based purely on emulated circuitry. There are no samples or waveforms involved. Ruismaker FM is capable of a broad range of sounds from the familiar to the alien, from percussive to squidgy.
FM percussion always reminds me of old video games or early PC adventures. The Ruismaker FM certainly hits the spot for those sorts of chiptune sounds. There’s a lot more in the realms of the melodic than its virtual analogue counterpart.
It’s important to note that these are not stand-alone apps for the iPad, they are Audio Unit plug-ins. This means that they need a host such as Garage Band, Cubasis, Modstep or AUM in order to run. At least that means you won’t get tangled up in all the AudioBus messiness of trying to run the drum synth alongside another app.
Both Ruismaker and Ruismaker FM are available in the iTunes App Store for $4.99.
