Free Plugins of the Week
Fors Sala: Send Your Sounds to Outer Space
The developers call Sala a “ceremonial reverb”, and I think they’re onto something. Despite its unassuming GUI, this shimmer reverb plugin should not be underestimated. Instead of presenting the same old collection of standard rooms, halls, and cathedrals, Sala is an “incredibly unrealistic reverb” that sends your sounds to “the furthest points of our galaxy”.

Its main strengths are huge ambient spaces with plenty of modulation, turning simple sounds into endless washes of shimmering reflections. You can shape the reverb using the familiar Size, Decay, and Tone parameters. In addition, however, Sala offers a unique Zoom control that affects the pre-diffusion stage, letting you zoom in on the sound for an up-close effect. Great stuff!
Sala is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux in VST3, AU, and CLAP formats.
brand0 Gooper: Juicy, Goopy Flanger and Phaser Effects
Gooper by brand0 is a free multi-stage flanger and phaser plugin that can transform your drum loops, vocals, and audio tracks into something completely different and unexpected. As the effect can sync to your song tempo, it’s also great for creating interesting and exciting buildups and transitions in your music.

According to the developer, Gooper uses up to five comb filters simultaneously. You can shape the effect by adjusting the sweeping range of the fundamental frequencies. On top of that, Gooper includes a barber pole phaser that you can activate by pulling the lever on the right.
Gooper is available for macOS and Windows in VST3 and AU formats.
Lancaster Audio Pulse 2: Versatile Multi-Platform IR Loader
Pulse 2, which was developed by Lancaster Audio in collaboration with Aurora DSP, is a versatile IR loader designed to complement the developer’s extensive library of impulse responses, four of which are included with the free version. It’s also compatible with 3rd-party IRs, so it should work with any IR in your library.

The plugin offers four slots for IRs, each with HPF, LPF, and Offset controls. There’s also an auto-align feature. You can use the X/Y pad to dial in any blend of the four IRs you like. In addition, Pulse 2 offers a global 4-band EQ for shaping the overall sound. The final result can be exported as a new IR.
Pulse 2 is available for macOS and Windows in VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
