Sequential Circuits Prophet X – is this the hybrid synth we’ve been waiting for?
A week before Superbooth Dave Smith Instruments releases a teaser video of the Sequential Prophet X. It seems to be a hybrid synthesizer and sampler – crikey!
Prophet X
The teaser video opens with some unexpected piano sounds, then blends in something electronic followed by some choir voices. This is definitely sample based with a lot of weirdness and wonderfulness going on. It reminds me perhaps of something like the Kurzweil K2000 or Nord Stage. You could even draw comparisons with the Yamaha Montage, but let’s hope not. Could this really be a workstation keyboard from DSI?
Looking at the image there appear to be three screens and a lot of very lovely knobs. It has the logo for 8DIO at the top right who are a sample library production company, and presumably indicates where the sampled sounds come from. Elsewhere though it has to possess the synthesized heart of a Prophet analogue synth – I can’t imagine a situation where it wouldn’t.
It’s going to be interesting to see how this reveals itself.

Be sick if you could gig touring shows with just it, having the top quality multisampled bread and butter sounds with capability to split and layer with analog. I fly with a korg/vox continental 61 keyboard and it barely fits in overhead bin, but I can’t bring my prophet 6 too, so it stays home!
