We reported last week about the hitherto unreleased Prophet XL being mentioned in a magazine review. Well, now it’s official. Sequential has released all the details of the Prophet XL Sample-Plus-Synthesis Hybrid Synth.

It’s not exactly a supersized Prophet X, it’s more of slight beef-up. First in size because it has 15 more keys and they are semi-weighted. And secondly, actually, the bigger keyboard is really all that’s different about it. The Prophet XL does also introduce a 32 voice paraphonic performance mode, but this is an upgrade that’s available on the Prophet X so they both end up with exactly the same sound engines. And that’s all good – many people will be pleased with both the action and length of the keyboard and the 32 voices. It just feels like more a Prophet X.5 or simply the 76 note version rather than what you would imagine the “XL” means.

Here’s a full comparison chart of the Sequential synth lineup.

Not to worry. You still get an interesting fusion of Sequential digital/analog synthesis and 150GB of internal sample content created by 8Dio. It’s all still routed through the sound-sculpting modulation functions, filters and effects. There’s 50GB of space waiting for your samples when support arrives in December, in the meantime, you can import other libraries. The synthesis side provides 2 digital oscillators per voice with waveshaping and supersaw. Then you have 2 analog filters, 4 LFOs and 4 envelopes per voice. There are 2 digital effects per layer, a 64 step polyphonic sequencer and an arpeggiator. So it’s a massive synthesizer.

“We designed the Prophet XL for musicians who wanted more of a good thing. By adding an extended, semi-weighted action keyboard and enabling 32-voice performance mode, we’ve made it even more satisfying to play the acoustic and electric pianos and other instruments, where increased polyphony is crucial. We’re making 32-voice mode available on the Prophet X, as well, so that all of our users will benefit.”

The Prophet XL will be available in November for $4399.
