SIR Audio Tools StandardGATE is a versatile gate plug-in
A noise gate is equally useful for cleaning up audio tracks and for creative effects. SIR Audio Tools StandardGATE is a new kid on the block that not only helps to remove unwanted noise, but can also shape the dynamics of your tracks in a creative way.
SIR Audio Tools StandardGATE
Chances are that you’ve already got multiple gate plug-ins in your collection, including the one that came with your DAW. While you may be thinking that you don’t need another one, StandardGATE by SIR Audio Tools comes with a bunch of interesting features that could make you change your mind.
The developer says that StandardGATE lends itself not only to traditional audio cleanup tasks, such as removing unwanted mic bleed, breathing noises or tape hiss. While it can do all of those, the plug-in also offers many ways to get creative.
In addition to the familiar attack, hold, release, and ratio knobs, StandardGATE features a visualizer that makes it easy to keep an eye on the dynamics of your signal and the gate’s response to it. Along with classic detector modes such as Peak and RMS, it offers a couple of specialized algorithms like Percussive and Transient for more surgical tasks. Apart from this, there’s a set of de-bleeding filters for isolation of signals.
Besides the internal side chain, StandardGATE offers an external side chain input, so it can react to a signal coming from another track. You can also trigger the effect via MIDI. And it not only operates as a basic noise gate, but also as a ducker and upward expander. This opens up a wide range of creative possibilities.
To summarize, I think that “Standard” is a bit of an understatement here. StandardGATE looks like a comprehensive gating tool that could become your go-to effect for all sorts of dynamic experiments.
Price and compatibility
StandardGATE is now available from the developer’s website for USD 49/EUR 39. You can also get it bundled with SIR Audio Tools’ StandardCLIP and Spectrum Analyzer plug-ins for USD 79/EUR 59.
The plug-in runs on macOS10.13 or higher (including Apple Silicon) and Windows 10 or higher. It comes in AU, AAX, VST and VST3 formats.
