Sonarworks SoundID Reference
SoundID Reference works as a standalone app and plug-in. Its core competence remains the same – getting the most accurate sound possible from your headphones and monitors. The software corrects the headphones’ frequency response and compensates for the room acoustics when dealing with speakers. You can take measurements of your listening space with a test microphone for speakers, or choose from a list of manufacturers and models for headphones. If your cans are not in the list, you can send them to Sonarworks and they will create an individual profile. That costs USD 149, though. Lab time is expensive.
The software has some new features as well. Translation Check enables simulations of different listening environments, such as cars, in-ear headphones, laptops, smartphones, televisions, and various studio speakers. This seems to be a feature that’s growing popular and is quite useful as well.
The Custom Target function is interesting, too. There, you only adjust select frequency ranges in the frequency response curve to create new presets. Three different filter modes are another feature. Zero latency makes Reference suitable for live tracking, and Linear Phase gets you that mathematically precise digital audio reproduction. Good stuff, all in all!
Specification and price
Sonarworks SoundID Reference runs under macOS and Windows. You can get a 21-day demo version from the developer’s website. The prices vary depending on the configuration. Upgrades start at EUR 49 for the headphones version and EUR 119 for the speakers and headphones version. The list prices are EUR 99 (headphones), EUR 249 (speakers & headphones), and EUR 299 (speakers & headphones plus measurement microphone). Our affiliate partner Thomann has some slightly better prices, though.
The EUR 299 bundle includes a SoundID Reference Measurement Microphone with individual calibration profile. The microphone is of the electret-condenser type with a pre-polarised capsule.
