Sputnik Modular Buchla inspired Variable Waveform Generator
Sputnik Modular awakens to present us with a Buchla inspired voltage controlled oscillator in the form of the hard-sync enabled Variable Waveform Generator.
Variable Waveform Generator
The VWG is a discrete triangle core voltage-controlled oscillator with four alarmingly tall sliders for waveform modulation and manipulation. It has five waveform outputs covering pulse, sine, saw and triangle plus a sub-oscillator square wave output. It has all the usual oscillator type things like tuning controls, linear and exponential FM and it can be switched from a VCO to an LFO mode to use it as a modulator.
One unusual feature is that it features hard sync rather than the soft sync usually associated with triangle core oscillators.
However, all the exciting stuff happens around those four faders. The four modulation controls line up nicely underneath the waveform to which they apply. You then also have a switch that swaps between a couple of parameters and attenuated voltage control at the bottom.
- Sine: The sine wave channel it’s all about wave folding. The switch swaps between symmetrical and asymmetrical.
- Sawtooth: The slider increases the amount of saw wave animation. The switch doubles and triples the effect.
- Triangle: The triangle waveform gets a rather nice overdrive. You can switch between Odd and Even harmonic saturation.
- Pulse: It’s pulse width modulation that swaps between an Edge or Centre focus.
It’s really interesting to have these different forms of modulation focused on individual waves. It pulls you into directions that compete for your interest, pushing you towards unexpected explorations and combinations. DivKid has produced a video that takes you through 19 advanced patches with the VWG. It shows the module to have vast possibilities and capable of endless tonal adventures.
The Variable Waveform Generator is available now for £349.

No mixed/final out? That would’ve been nice.
