SSL 4K E Plugin: Get That Classic Console Sound
With the new SSL 4K E channel strip plug-in, you get the classic sound of the legendary 4000E console with its flexible workflow options. Is this the perfect processor for any channel within your favourite DAW? Let’s find out!
First introduced in 1979, the 4000E console was a major part of the recording renaissance of the early 1980s. Preferred by artists, producers, and engineers, the E-series became renowned for the dimensionality and depth of its sound.

As a comprehensive preamp to fader solution, the 4K E is clearly designed to replace the stock compression and EQ plug-ins within your DAW. It offers meticulous emulation of every aspect of the original 4000E channel strip circuitry.
This includes the Jensen T-115K-E transformer from the 4000E mic preamps and the DBX 202 Gold Can fader VCA that brings layers of saturation into the sound throughout the signal path.

As you’d expect, the EQ section is particularly detailed, with a selection of sonic different characteristics. This is made possible with the gritty ‘02 Brown’ knob, the sought-after ‘132 Orange’ knob passive EQ, and the more transparent ‘242 Black’ knob with its additional low-end heft.
The dynamics section is another key aspect, as the original compressor underwent several revisions while the console was in production. Here, you have soft-knee and fast/slow attack options, as well as a logarithmic release curve.
Meanwhile, the famous gate and expander provide precise, yet musical-sounding tools to bring any audio source into focus. In addition, the DBX 202 VCA allows you to drive the level and introduce harmonic saturation.

There’s also a high-quality mode with intelligent oversampling, when you want as close of an emulation to analogue as possible. What’s more, you get the flexibility of being able to flip the signal path and rearrange the channel strip to fit your specific application.
All in all, it’s a mighty impressive-looking processing strip, and considering the usual price of SSL plug-ins it offers a fair bit of value for its eyebrow-raising price.
