SSL Fusion Violet EQ plug-in: 2-band shelving EQ of hardware origin
SSL keeps on rolling with its Fusion line of plug-ins, just like it promised earlier this year. The new one is Violet EQ – emulating the 2-band minimum phase-shift shelving EQ from the Fusion hardware processor.

The simple but effective EQ design lets you add a quick touch of high-end sheen or further weight to bass with very little fuss. You can engage a stepped high-pass filter (30Hz up to 50hz), and change the low (30 up to 90Hz) and high (8 up to 20kHz) bands. SSL further sweetened up the original hardware design by adding a ‘FAT’ toggle. When the high-pass filter is active, ‘FAT’ adds a subtle bump around the filter’s cut-off frequency. That’s a tried and true way of bringing back a little heft after rolling off the extreme lows. Other than the EQ, the plug-in features a bunch of presets by name producers, cross-platform preset management, an A/B comparison system, and ECO mode for low latency work.
Price and availability
Until January 13 2022, SSL Violet EQ is on an introductory sale for EUR 119, down from EUR 159. A free 14-day trial version is provided. You can also subscribe to the SSL Native Complete Bundle (starting at USD 15 / month), which is basically what SSL wants you to do with its plug-in sales strategy as of late. Look, I love SSL like I love my momma, but just like I don’t agree with her half the time , I don’t agree with this strategy in particular. EUR 119 is pricey already, and EUR 159 is straight-up overpriced for an EQ plug-in like Violet. It’s a mini-character EQ that’s sold for EUR 10 more than FabFilter Pro-Q 3, which is on nearly every major mix. I think SSL is still kind of learning plug-in sales at the moment, given its recently expanded focus on software. So don’t be hatin’ – I’m sure they’ll figure out what works and what doesn’t as time goes. Like all SSL plug-ins, Violet EQ is available in all major plug-in formats for 64-bit Windows and macOS systems.
