SSL X-Limit: Versatile limiter with all-in-one visualization
SSL has released the X-Limit plug-in. Designed as a versatile and transparent limiter for tracks and buses, X-Limit provides plenty of control and comprehensive visualization. The developer says that its latency is even low enough to use it during tracking.
SSL X-Limit
SSL is continuously expanding its X plug-in series. After releasing X-Delay and X-Gate earlier this year, the company has now launched X-Limit.
According to SSL, X-Limit is a versatile limiter designed for tracks, buses, and mixes. The plug-in offers a choice of four characteristics: Transparent, Glue, Punch, and Auto. In addition to the essential Gain, Threshold, and Ceiling controls, X-Limit offers an adjustable release time and Auto Release feature. There’s also a True Peak mode for accurate limiting of inter-sample peaks, as well as lookahead processing. The Gain Lock feature keeps the applied gain in place, which helps to compare different presets and limiting styles.
Ducking and Steering Meters
Furthermore, X-Limit offers an adjustable Channel Link feature, along with Ducking and Steering meters that visualize how the limiting affects the stereo image. SSL says that the meters help to determine the optimal amount of channel linking, in order to minimize stereo degradation.
Speaking of visualization, X-Limit includes an all-in-one waveform visualizer that provides a good overview of what’s going on. You can adjust the Threshold and Ceiling sliders and see their effect on the waveform immediately.
Like other plug-ins from the X series, X-Limit combines some interesting features with comprehensive visualization. If you’re looking for a versatile limiter, I think it’s definitely worth a look.
Price and compatibility
SSL X-Limit is now available for an introductory price of USD 69, down from USD 99. This offer is good through August 28, 2022. The plug-in is also part of the SSL Complete subscription.
X-Limit runs on macOS 10.15 or higher (including native support for Apple Silicon processors) and Windows 10 or higher (64 bit). It’s available in AU, VST2, VST3, and AAX formats. You’ll need a free iLok account (or dongle) for authorization.
