The LoFi piano is full of vibes, wobble and juiciness and is completely free as an instrument for HALion and the free HALion Sonic SE 3.

LoFi Piano

This is instantly pleasing. The warmth of saturated tape, of sounds slowly falling apart and filling up with vintage vibes. LoFi Piano is based upon samples taken from an upright piano through vintage microphones. The interface then lines up 6 effects that push the piano into different forms of deterioration.

First, we have the Flutter effect that mimics subtle changes in tape speed. The Compress gives a simple way of squashing the dynamics to make the piano sit up in the mix. Saturate adds distortion and saturation giving it an edginess. Reduce will bring down the bitrate to questionable levels. Filter is a high and low pass filter to narrow the frequency bandwidth for a more telephonic approach. And finally we have a whole bunch of reverb. It sounds great and is perfect for some laid back chewy tunes.

LoFi piano runs inside of Steinberg’s HALion virtual instrument platform. Either the full version or if you’ve never experienced it before then you can download the completely free HALion Sonic SE 3 which is annoyingly hard to find on the Steinberg website – it’s as if they really want you to buy the full version of HALion or HALion Sonic. However, here it is and it lets you run HALion libraries without all the bells and whistles of the full version. There are some other great free instruments too.

Wow. It took me more than an hour to install all the software, license managers, download managers, updates, … Never had such a bad experience before with music software. Don’t think I will ever buy anything from Steinberg.

Same. The plugin sounds great, in the 20 minutes I got to use it before I experienced a sudden “license issue” – for a free plugin lol. Too much license junk, just give us something to download. It doesn’t need to be more difficult than that
