Steinberg Nuendo 12: Dialogue improvements, immersive mixing and more
Steinberg has released Nuendo 12. The latest version of the post-production DAW is heavily focused on improvements to the speech and dialogue editing workflow. Besides a new dialogue detection algorithm and an improved ADR system, Nuendo 12 also includes new tools for immersive headphone mixing, new effects for music production and sound design and many workflow and productivity enhancements.
Steinberg Nuendo 12
We already knew that Steinberg Nuendo 12 was coming since the developer gave us the first glimpse at the new version back in March. The wait is now over: Nuendo 12 is here, and it comes with a long list of improvements – especially if you work in speech and dialogue production.
Firstly, Nuendo 12 includes a new AI-powered dialogue detection algorithm that automatically separates speech and silent parts. You can audition both parts before applying the edit. There’s also a new audio alignment feature that lets you use multiple reference clips and apply their timing to a set of field recorder files. In addition to this, you can now correct the timing of dialogue clips directly in the Project window using the Free Warp tool. Add to this a seamless integration with Auto-Align Post 2, and you’ve got a comprehensive set of tools for dialogue and voice-over editing.
But that’s not all, because Steinberg has also worked on Nuendo’s ADR system. New features such as the ability to create ADR markers automatically by selecting audio events, connecting Nuendo’s marker system to external taker systems and dialogue script editors, Netflix TTAL import and export, and EdiCue v4 support should make working with dialogue even easier.
Immersive headphone mixing
Besides this, Steinberg has built immersive headphone mixing tools right into Nuendo 12. The DAW includes a new Headphones Match plug-in that emulates 387 different models of headphones. The Dolby Atmos renderer now offers binaural downmixing over headphones, and there’s a new setup assistant for converting channel-based projects to Dolby Atmos mixing projects. Moreover, the DAW now supports Space Controller OSC, which lets you use a mobile device to control spatial panning using physical movements.
But Nuendo 12 also brings improvements for musicians and sound designers. Besides the FX Modulator and Raiser plug-ins from Cubase 12, the software includes the MAAT Lin One dithering plug-in. Another feature carried over from Cubase is the new MIDI Remote system for better integration of third-party controllers.
In addition to this, the update includes many workflow enhancements, such as improvements to SpectraLayers One, as well as the Logical Editor and Input Transformer. The video and audio engines have also been updated, and the Windows version now supports MIDI over Bluetooth.
Lastly, the Nuendo 12 update includes the long-awaited native support for Apple Silicon processors, as well as Steinberg’s new, dongle-less licensing system.
Price and compatibility
Steinberg Nuendo 12 is now available for a suggested retail price of €/$ 999. If you own an earlier version or another DAW, you’ll find various updates, updates, and crossgrades in Steinberg’s web shop.
If you’ve activated Nuendo 11 after March 16, 2022, you’re eligible for a free grace period upgrade to Nuendo 12. In fact, at the time of this writing it looks like you can still grab Nuendo 11 for €799 (20% off) at Thomann*, so you may be able to score a fantastic deal on Nuendo 12 if you act really quickly.
The DAW requires macOS Monterey or Big Sur or Windows 10-11.
