The new Steven Slate Audio VSX Essentials Edition is your gateway to mixing and mastering with the acclaimed mix room simulation system. The Essentials bundle gets you a pair of VSX headphones and a collection of ten profiles, including studios, cars, headphones, and more.
Steven Slate Audio VSX Essentials
The Steven Slate Audio VSX System came out about two years ago. It consists of the VSX headphones and a modeling plugin that goes in your DAW’s mix bus. You can then load a variety of profiles to hear your mix in different environments like renowned studios and mastering rooms, but also cars, nightclubs, and several different types of headphones. This means that VSX not only gives you a chance to mix and master in the same environments as the pros, but also lets you check your mixes in a variety of settings to make sure they translate well.
All in all, the new VSX Essentials Edition looks like a great way to get started with VSX. Besides the VSX headphones, the bundle includes a set of ten VSX profiles: Steven’s Private Mix Room, Sonoma Studio, Luxury SUV Sound System, LA Nightclub Sound System, four well-known studio headphones, and two custom headphones. That should give you plenty of versatility to start with, and you can always add additional expansions later.
According to Steven Slate Audio, the VSX headphones provide a precise and linear frequency response with plenty of detail thanks to their beryllium drivers. They also offer the Acoustic Ported Subsonics technology to deliver low frequencies not normally available in headphones. An all-metal headband makes them durable while being light enough for extended mixing sessions.
Price and compatibility
If you’re located in the US, you can benefit from a rent-to-own plan that gets you the full version of VSX for $19.99/month over 24 months. The VSX Essentials Edition is mostly aimed at people outside of the US, who don’t have this option. You can now order the bundle from Thomann* for €369.
And if you already know that the Essentials Edition won’t be enough and you’re going to want additional profiles, the full VSX bundle is now on sale at Thomann* for €529.
The VSX plugin runs on macOS 10.10 or higher (including native support for Apple Silicon processors) and Windows 7 or higher. It’s available in VST, AU, and AAX Native formats (64 bit only).
