Summer NAMM 2017: Fender hand-wired ’64 Custom Deluxe Reverb
A vintage vibe for this '64 Blackface recreation
Announced at Summer NAMM, Fender’s new hand-wired ’64 Custom Deluxe Reverb is a recreation of one of its most popular guitar amp combos. There’s bags of vintage detail and a matching aged appearance to go with that classic tone.
Hand-wired ’64
This new Fender hand-wired ’64 Custom Deluxe Reverb has everything you could want from this stand-out year. They are often known as the Blackface model due to their black Tolex and pine construction and matching black control panel plate. Both Bright and Normal channels use a tube-driven spring reverb as well as a tremolo circuit. The all hand-wired AB763 circuitry has 20 Watts of output power. It’s loaded with a single Jensen C-12Q 12″ speaker and Fender say it’s as close as possible to the original ’60s model.
Aged
Fender has even gone as far as to age the amp slightly, which includes using extra-heavy textured Tolex covering and a lightly aged silver grille cloth, to simulate the original model’s appearance. All subtle details, but I think ones that people will appreciate, as it gives the whole amp that vintage vibe without being too over the top and relic’d.
’60s Valve tone
This Blackface recreation uses a set of Fender Vintage Blue tone capacitors, four 12AX7 valves and also two 12AT7 preamp tubes, a 5AR4/GZ34 rectifier tube, a matched pair of 6V6 output valves to give it that 20 watts of power.
This amp looks really good, but it will be a lot safer to use than those old 1960’s originals, as it will conform to modern electrical safety regulations. It should give you a vintage feel without the vintage woes of an original.
Of course, these aren’t going to be cheap and so you may want to get saving for one now. They will certainly be a hell of a lot cheaper than an original ’64 and safer to use!
