Superbooth 2019: Erica Synths Black Stereo Delay and Black Spring Reverb
Erica Synths has a bunch of new stuff at Superbooth but here are two impression effects Eurorack modules take caught my attention, the Black Spring Reverb and Black Stereo Delay.
Black Spring Reverb
Spring Reverbs tend to be emulations of actual spring reverbs unless they have a nice big reverb tank attached to them somewhere. Well, the Black Spring Reverb manages to squeeze an actual spring reverb tank behind the module front panel and still fit in a Eurorack skiff. Although they’ve also made ports available so you could attach it to an external tank is you wish and then mix in both.
On the front you have 8 different feedback effects with a single parameter knob and then a big reverb feedback control. By pushing the controls you can get it to feedback on itself without any external audio input or give it a bit of a clang for that classic spring sound. It has a vactrol based audio compressor and a feedback send/return loop. Quite an interesting unconventional reverb module.
Black Stereo Delay
This is based on their own DSP platform. It has tape, digital and ping-pong modes and a delay time that can go from almost nothing to about 3 seconds. There are 4 CV inputs that also have manual button controls for Hold, Add, Reverse and Tap or tempo. The “Add” button is for effecting the stereo spread by adding up to 500ms to the right channel to get some interesting panning. The “Hold” button allows you to record up to 20 seconds of audio and then use the Add button to overdub in a looper style. So, as with all Erica Synths modules they always put in something a bit extra.
The Stereo Delay will be out shortly, the Spring Reverb should follow in a couple of months.
