With Superposition, Dillon Bastan expands the creative possibilities of sample mangling in Ableton Live with another experimental Max for Live tool. Superposition is based on a probabilistic Markov system that defines the probability of an event depending on the previous event. This allows you to create complex, ever-changing soundscapes in real time that go far beyond conventional sampling methods. If you’ve been working with Ableton’s Simpler or Sampler and are looking for new, unconventional ways to process sound, this multisampler is an exciting alternative – and it looks pretty cool, too!

Dillon Bastan Superposition: Granular Sampling with Markov Logic

The new M4l device Superposition by Dillon Bastan allows you to create up to 16 independent sample states that function as individually configurable presets. Each state can contain up to six samples that can be accessed via different playback modes.

In addition to classic playback, granular and spectral processing are available. Different start point modes, loop lengths and repetitions offer immense flexibility. In addition, playback direction and transition parameters can be controlled to give each sample state its own characteristics. Sounds complicated, it is, but the result is (depending on the sample) very interesting!

Particularly noteworthy is the modular architecture of the effects section, which is available separately in each of the 16 states. Filters, distortions, bit crushers, wave folders, phasers, delays, and reverbs provide a wide range of effects that can be customized for each sample. The modulation section is equally versatile, with envelope generators, step sequencers, LFOs and random generators. These can be assigned to specific states to create unique sounds. Wow!

Unique Sample Morphing Technology at an Affordable Price

Superposition lets you manually or automatically recall the states of your settings. The automatic trigger function can work according to specific rules, allowing independent rhythmic and melodic structures to emerge from a sequence of states. This is where the fun begins. You can also define MIDI controllers for the various states, allowing you to play the plug-in in real time. Features such as transition glides, gate playback, and locking options for the last state change further expand the creative possibilities.
