Synton Fénix To Rise From The Ashes As Patch Point Fénix II PP
Synton’s legendary modular synthesizer is coming back as the Patch Point Fénix II PP with all the original parameters plus new ones.
Patch Point Fénix II PP
Aspirational modular synthesizer post alert! You may have heard of the Fénix modular synth. It’s a ridiculously rare modular system from the late 1990s built by Synton, the Dutch company behind the also rare Synton Syrinx. Synton followed the first one up in 2010 with the Fénix II. I first heard about the Fénix when researching a story on synthesizer collector Sonic Boom from Spacemen 3 and it sounded incredible. Now modular company Patch Point has announced that it’s remaking the II in a limited run.
Rising From The Ashes
The new Fénix II looks incredible, with the company promising “a fully analogue synthesizer, with the same components as the original Fénix II, with some upgrades.” They also say that it is a “direct descendent” of the original, made in consultation with the original designer, Synton’s Bert Vermuelen. (There doesn’t seem to be a connection to TINRS’s Fénix IV.)
A solid modular system in a single panel, the Fénix II PP is very well-apportioned. It has three VCOs, four different VCFs, three envelope generators, four VCAs and five LFOs. There are also seven mixers, a phaser and bucket brigade delay, eight-step analogue sequencer with its own clock. Still not satisfied? You also get a waveshaper, wavemultiplier and full wave rectifier, and much more.
New Fénix Feathers
As for the new upgrades, Patch Point have promised a formant filter for VCF3, which is “a new modern design using chips instead of vactrols which allows for voltage controlled resonance and an expanded frequency range.” There’s also an LPG which similarly uses chips rather than vactrols. Finally, the delay is now a dual delay with a third switch position, allowing for more control.
We Have No Bananas
Patch Point is currently taking pre-orders for the Fénix II PP. They’re being made in small batches and will top out after 100 units. They’re going fast, with only 14 of the first batch of 30 still available and artists like Hainbach and Richard Devine already onboard. The price is €4999. Patch Point offers payment in instalments as well as a discounted banana cable option.
