Tama Releases Lars Ulrich 40th Anniversary Drum Kit: Only 72 Units!
72 Seasons World Tour Edition
Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and Tama started a partnership in 1984 that has lasted to this day. To celebrate, Tama is releasing the Lars Ulrich 40th Anniversary Drum Kit. Fitting to Metallica’s last album, 72 Seasons, there will only ever be 72 drum kits available.
Tama and Lars Ulrich: 40 Years at the Top of Heavy Metal
Let’s rewind the clocks. It’s 1984. Metallica has just released Ride The Lightning, which isn’t quite the masterpiece that its follow-up Master of Puppets is. But with For Whom The Bell Tolls, Fade to Black, and Creeping Death, the thrash metal band proves how blazingly fast and anthemic their songs can be. And they’re touring relentlessly.
Outside of giant bass cabs, it’s mostly drum and drum hardware cases you’re carrying, loading, and unloading when you tour. And set up. And tear down. And set up. And tear down. You need the most durable instrument, the most rigid hardware possible, when you’re playing 150+ shows a year. That’s where Tama and Lars Ulrich meet. That’s what the Lars Ulrich 40th Anniversary Drum Kit celebrates.
Lars Ulrich 40th Anniversary Drum Kit: A celebration in 72 Seasons fashion
Anyone who witnessed Metallica on their world tour since their latest album 72 Seasons (released April, 2023) will remember the bright yellow drum kit Lars was playing. Two bass drums, two toms, two floor toms, snare drum, with black shell hoops in a yellow finish. That’s a drum kit you’ll remember even if your seat was on the other side of the stadium.
So, Tama is releasing this drum kit as a limited edition for drummers, Metallica fans, and Lars Ulrich fans. Fitting to the album’s name, there will only ever be 72 sets available worldwide. Each kit includes two 22″x 16″ bass drums, a 10”x8” tom, a 12″x10″ tom, a 16″x14″ floor tom, and a 16″x16″ floor tom, all Starclassic Maple shells.
In addition, each drum will come with a set of REMO heads. But not any kind of REMO heads. The toms and floor toms will come with REMO Emperor Coated heads on the batter side and REMO Ambassador Ebony heads on the bottom. And the two bass drums come with REMO Ambassador Ebony heads on the batter side and REMO Powerstroke on the front. This is the exact same configuration Lars used on the 72 Seasons tour.
What does it cost?
If you look closer at the product images of the Lars Ulrich 40th Anniversary Drum Kit, you’ll notice that Lars’ signature snare is missing. That snare is still available separately. You can get it here at Thomann*.
While the price of the Lars Ulrich 40th Anniversary Drum Kit is not public yet, I’d assume such an exclusive kit (you’ll get a certification card with Lars Ulrich’s autograph with each kit) won’t be cheap, given Starclassic’s already premium price and quality. But it’s one the the most beautiful drum kits, I’ve seen in recent years.
