TASCAM DR-05XP and DR-07XP

TASCAM has expanded the popular DR series of portable recorders with two new 2-channel options with 32-bit float 96 kHz recording capabilities. Both models can function as a USB audio interface with a stereo mini jack input, allowing you to capture directly into a desktop DAW or recording app on your mobile device or tablet.

What’s more, you can also use either model as a USB microphone, which is very useful for recording or content creation. Additional common features include a nifty chromatic guitar tuner, three low-cut filter modes, and an Auto Tone function for simplifying post-production sync.

While the DR-05XP has fixed omnidirectional mics, the DR-07XP gives you the option to switch between AB and XY positions for different applications. Overall, with up to 512GB storage from a single microSDXC card and up to 17.5 hours of recording time, the DR-05XP and DR-07XP are both excellent compact recorders in their own right.

The new DR-05XP and DR-07XP recorders build upon the strengths offered by their first-generation siblings while taking both sound quality and features to an entirely new level. With 32-bit float recording capability, these recorders capture sound with greater precision than ever before. Combine this with their ability to provide 17.5 hours of battery life using standard alkaline batteries and you have an incredibly versatile, easy-to-use recorder that is ideal for a wide range of applications. I’m confident recording enthusiasts will find much to like with these new units.

    Dear Tascamn,
Great, but please can these handheld recording devices get some sort of digital input? – ie. AES/EBU or S/PDIF or even USB audio.
I’d like to record what’s coming off my digital desk at a live gig, indepedantly of any computer or the desk itself. I have the AES/EUB output spare to use for this, but no small device exists on the market that can record 24 bit stereo from AES/EBU clean and transparently as uncompressed WAV.

At least that way also, with digital input, the high resolution bit depth here could be a useful benefit. As is, with analogue only consumer inputs or built in mics run via a low voltage battery preamp, the noise floor / dynamic range is barely even 18 bits worth of audio signal depth.
