TC Electronic 2290 P – ’80s Dynamic Digital Delay in a pedal
TC 2290 Dynamic Digital Delay reborn as a pedal
The TC Electronic 2290 P puts the classic 2290 Dynamic Digital Delay rack effect in a pedal format. They have also added some modern updates to make it more user-friendly.
TC Electronic 2290 P
The new TC Electronic 2290 P has been teased for a few months now, mainly by Steve Lukather’s guitar tech Jon Gosnell who has been talking about it online via YouTube and Instagram.
Key Pedal Features
This new pedal format comes with 128 presets, three footswitches, a dedicated ‘Learn’ Tap Tempo with Sub-Divisions, and a handy Feedback Path FX insert. Essentially, giving guitar players all those well-loved delays with features that suit the pedal format.
It offers players up to 9.999 seconds of delay time.
Apart from the delay the effect also offers chorus, flanger, tremolo, vibrato, phaser, panning, ducking, and compression. Making it far more than a one-trick pony and potentially the heart of a pedalboard setup.
It has three dedicated footswitches for preset A/B, bank up/down, and the dedicated Learn tap tempo. What’s more, the Quick dial knob provides fast access to edit the parameters.
TC also states that they have made it far easier access to special functions previously hidden deep within the original 2290 rack unit and that they have added an expanded range of feedback filters and deep modulation.
Integration
TC states that the added guitar-friendly Feedback Loop is used to insert any additional effects to the wet signal and the option to use sub-divisions to control the Modulation block. This could really add to the overall versatility of this unit and make it integrate nicely with a player’s existing stompboxes.
Tap-Tempo
There is also a well-thought-out Tap-Tempo section that uses the LEARN foot switch for control per Preset (A&B), per Board (A+B), or globally. Plus, users have both MIDI for control, and they can use an expression pedal to control any effects parameter.
Essentially, making the whole system easy to control whilst playing and for making on-the-fly adjustments.
Digital Display
The look of the 2290 P closely resembles the original 2290 rack which was first released in 1985 and was discontinued in 2005. This means users have those now famous red LEDs to show the basic information at a glance.
Dynamic & Panning
It offers the same dynamic delays, where users can control the delayed notes independently from the original. The effect is stereo, so panning is also an option.
Plus it has three options including:
- Processing the entire signal including the original sound
- Affecting only the delayed notes panned between the left and right channels
- Processing only the original signal
Users can also choose between a true bypass or a buffered bypass for trails on/off. I also like that users can import, export, organize, and share presets via the 2290 desktop app.
Verdict
It looks retro, it sounds retro and I think it will please a lot of guitarists. I can’t wait to try one out and compare it to the competition. The classic ’80s digital delay, added control features, and that FX Loop integration could make this new digital delay a winner.
The 2290 P is currently available from Thomann.
