Teenage Engineering OP-XY: Synthesizer Groove Machine – Now Available!
Is this the ultimate music machine?
[November 14, 2024] The cat is out of the bag: Teenage Engineering’s OP-XY is now officially presented. The “ultimate” synthesizer groove machine is now available for the typical TE price of $2299. Somehow I’m a little bit tempted by my G.A.S. right now …
All About Teenage Engineering OP-XY
It’s a Groovebox!
Teenage Engineering expands its Field series with the new OP-XY, a powerful groovebox that is expected to be the successor of the popular OP-Z (with influences of the OP-1). The OP-XY incorporates the signature design elements of the OP-1, such as the aluminum case and touch-sensitive buttons. And it comes in a sleek black color – very cool! The heart of the new hardware is an advanced performance sequencer powered by a dual-CPU processor. In addition to a polyphonic synthesizer and multi-sampler, the OP-XY offers innovative functions such as “Brain Chord Progression”, which allows you to create chord progressions intuitively.
Connectivity has been expanded to include a multi-output port (3.5 mm mini jack) for Eurorack (CV, gate, sync), synthesizers, pedals and headphones, as well as MIDI and USB-C ports. Thanks to integrated punch-in effects, master fx and a gyroscope, you can create sound changes in real time by moving the device. Teenage Engineering’s modular approach allows you to assemble musical ideas like building blocks – similar to the arrangement view of a DAW? I really like that!
OP-XY is More Than a Sequencer
Visually and functionally, the OP-XY is quite different from its predecessor, the OP-Z. The design is much more robust and of higher quality. The price is of course typical Teenage Engineering – but for the price we can expect a lot: the OP-XY will be available for $2299. The OP-Z’s video capabilities are also not integrated. That’s a shame for video producers, but it leaves more room for sound and sequencing for musicians.
Whether the high price is justified remains to be seen. Nevertheless, the extended features and the new hardware suggest that the Swedes have once again created a powerful tool. I definitely have to have a look at it! And if you like the OP-1 Field, this new one looks very sexy too.

Mysterious Synth With a new Approach Leaked?
[07 November 2024] Teenage Engineering may be about to launch a new product called the OP-XY. A recent application to the FCC has piqued the interest of fans, and eagle-eyed observers on Reddit have spotted clues pointing to a new device. Apparently, the OP-XY will soon receive the necessary certification for the US market, and Teenage Engineering has even requested a confidentiality period until April 2025. This suggests that the company is expecting special innovations that will remain under wraps for the time being. Is this the leak for the mysterious Swedish announcement?
Teenage Engineering OP-XY: New Bluetooth Synthesiser on the Horizon?
Update: Another teaser message has been sent from TE. This one contains the date 11/14/2024, so we will soon know more about what is behind it! There is at least some wild speculation about an OP-XY field in the comments section of this Instagram post.
Social media activity also hints at the forthcoming product. A mysterious image recently appeared on Teenage Engineering’s Instagram and website, a simple black and white gradient with the message “etwas kommt bald” – which is German for “Something is coming soon”. CEO Jesper Kouthoofd also posted the same image with the hashtag #XY, further fuelling the rumour mill. This suggests that the OP-XY could be related to the existing product line, particularly the OP-Z.
It is also worth mentioning that Kouthoofd’s posts included pictures of a ‘grip car 2’, which could also be about to be launched. The comment ‘#XY #bluetooth approved #launch soon #gripcar2 #autonomous’ suggests that it could be an autonomous device, and that the OP-XY could get a Bluetooth function. These clues suggest that Teenage Engineering is preparing to expand its portfolio, once again piquing the curiosity of its loyal community.
Teenage Engineering Prepares to Launch New Hardware
The predecessors of the alleged OP-XY, notably the OP-Z, were known for their compact size and versatile features, including a synthesiser and sequencer. Bluetooth connectivity, as the OP-XY may have, would give users even more flexibility and further simplify mobile music production and control. Such a feature could make the OP-XY perfect for use in combination with other Teenage Engineering devices. One Reddit user even speculates about an X/Y keyboard a la TENORI-ON. We are excited!
Teenage Engineering seems to be trying to keep the excitement high with targeted hints and secrecy. The request for keeping it secret until April 2025 definitely suggests that the company has high expectations for the OP-XY and that something really interesting might be coming – typical TE, I’d say. An official announcement in the next few days could shed some light on the situation and reveal the ideas behind the OP-XY and the possible Grip Car 2.
We will of course keep you up to date!

If its a toy school bus, im done with TE.
Whatever this ends up being, I’m 100% confident it will be several orders of magnitude more idiotic and overpriced than anything I can imagine.
I also thought so, but it seems like they actually made something decent this time.
I would somewhat agree, if the price was decent. I mean, I really am no cheapo, but I would have issues, buying it at half the price, if you compare it to what you can get for it. All smaller elektron boxes, a 707, MPC, Maschine+. Also, I don’t see the “killer feature” to be honest. It’s small (this whole “portable” thing was really only invented by YouTubers filming their synth in a forrest, wasn’t it?) but you could buy an ELZ 1 if you want this.
The form factor is probably it. For years my op-1(now op-1 field) comes with me on every trip. Yes the others do more for less money but I can’t throw them in my shoulder bag like the op. It oddly enough has just enough hardware buttons/knobs to be way more useful/intuitive than say just an ipad. The ipad can do all of these things, just not as elegantly.
looks more than decent compared to previous TE products.
The price tag though… (as usual).
2300? no, dear, no.
“And just for” 🤣
I had to write it like this… 😂😎
Well, it does look better in person, but as mentioned above, where is the killer feature? Hope for some proper user videos, the synth influencer once are just tragic at this point (who will be the first manufacturer showing more than an arp or 1min chord challenge?)
Insane pricing
